With decades of knowledge, experience, and expertise in internal door manufacturing, we are confident that Ecohardwood oak doors are not only visually stunning but also functional, long-lasting, and provide excellent privacy and acoustic insulation. It is very important to us to get all the measurements correct so we can tailor your doors to perfection. Measuring an interior door correctly is crucial for ensuring a proper fit, whether replacing an old door or installing a new one. A precise measurement prevents gaps, misalignment, or difficulty in opening and closing the door.
This guide will take you through the process of measuring an interior door, covering the most important aspects you need to know for a seamless Ecohardwood oak door installation. Every manufacturer may have different door measurement requirements, and European measurements may differ from those in England and the UK. Please follow our guide to learn what’s important when ordering your beautiful doors from us.
Our oak door set comes all-inclusive, with every necessary component: door leaf, door frame, architraves, hinges, lockset, and rubber insert. Since all these parts are designed to fit our doors perfectly, you save on costs, time, and labour trying to find matching details, ensuring a visually appealing and seamless installation. Because our doors come complete, you must provide not the frame measurements but the dimensions of the opening where the door will go, considering existing or planned floor and wall coverings.
We usually measure the door opening with a laser, but you can do this using a simple measuring tape. Make sure your measuring tape is long enough to cover the entire width and height of the door opening.
Before you start, gather the necessary tools: a measuring tape, level, carpenter's square, pencil and paper, and a step ladder (if required). Having these tools on hand will make the process smoother and more accurate.
As manufacturers of internal oak doors, we recognize the importance of knowing the door swing direction and three essential dimensions: the door opening’s height and width, along with the thickness or depth of the wall surrounding it.
To determine the door swing direction, stand on the side of the door where it opens towards you. If the hinges are on the right, it’s a right-hand door; if they’re on the left, it’s a left-hand door. This simple method helps ensure you choose the correct door swing for your space.
After determining the door swing direction, you can start measuring the door opening.
1. Begin by measuring the opening height on both sides, considering any future flooring, such as parquet or tiles that may not be installed yet. Record the average height.
2. Then, measure the width of the opening at the top, middle, and bottom points and calculate the average width.
3. Finally, measure the wall thickness or door opening depth at three points: the top, middle, and bottom. This measurement is essential for ensuring a proper fit.
If you plan to replace an existing door, you must remove the current door architraves to measure the opening accurately.
When determining the depth of a bathroom opening, remember to factor in the thickness of any wall coverings you intend to use, such as tiles.
For precise results, measurements should not vary by more than 2 mm. However, if the walls are plastered or concrete, this variance is often greater, leading to gaps when installing the door frame. We recommend levelling the walls to minimize these discrepancies.
Accurate recording is essential: write down all measurements clearly and double-check measurements to avoid errors.
To ensure a perfect fit for your interior doors, avoid these common mistakes:
Confusing Door Opening Sides: Always consult the door manufacturer's instructions, as European measurements can differ from UK standards. Double-check to prevent errors.
Incorrect Measurements for Ecohardwood Oak Doors: For Ecohardwood oak doors, measure the door structure opening rather than the door frames or leaf sizes, as these doors come with their own frame.
Forgetting Architectural Drawings: Ensure you provide architectural drawings that include door openings. This helps in accurately assessing the fit and design.
Measuring at Only One Point: Measure at multiple points to account for any variations in the opening.
Ignoring Future Installations: Consider how future installations, such as flooring and wall finishes, may affect the door fitting.
By paying attention to these details, you'll avoid common pitfalls and ensure a smooth installation process.
When ordering your door provide the manufacturer with precise measurements, including any additional information and architectural drawings. Talk to Ecohardwood team if you have any qustions or doubts. It's better to measure twice than regret later.
Accurate measurement is necessary part of a successful interior door installation. It ensures a well-fitted door that will provide excellent acoustic and thermal insulation and enhances your space's functionality and aesthetics for decades.
