When selecting wood flooring, understanding the different grades is essential in making the best choice for your space. Wood floor grading determines the overall appearance of the wood, including its colour variation, quantity and size of knots, micro-cracks and other natural features. The grading system allows homeowners to select a wood floor that matches their desired aesthetic, whether a clean, uniform look or a more rustic, natural appearance.
At Ecohardwood we offer 4 grades to choose from: Character, Original, Select and Prime.
It's important to note that these grades do not indicate the quality of the wood. At Ecohardwood, regardless of the grade you choose, you will always receive premium, top-quality wood floors. As a manufacturer, we offer our full range of colour finishes across all grades, giving you the flexibility to choose the perfect combination that best fits your style and requirements.
Wood flooring grades can be tricky to navigate as they are not universally standardized. Each company follows its grading criteria, so what one supplier or manufacturer calls "rustic grade" may look completely different from another supplier’s "rustic grade" despite using the same term.
It’s also essential to understand that wood is a natural material, meaning its unique characteristics can vary from batch to batch. You may find more knots or slightly different colour variations in one order compared to another. A grade doesn’t define every detail but rather represents a range of natural features.
One key differentiator that sets Ecohardwood flooring apart is that none of our grades contain sapwood, ensuring unmatched durability and longevity. Sapwood, being the softer part of the tree, is more susceptible to damage and wear over time. By eliminating sapwood, we provide customers with a flooring solution that looks stunning and is built to last.
As a natural product, wood flooring is crafted in line with industry standards that allow a grading tolerance of 5-10%. This means that up to 10% of the boards may vary by one grade level, either higher or lower than specified. Since nature can’t be "printed" or precisely replicated, unlike laminate or other synthetic materials, each batch of wood flooring presents unique characteristics, with every board displaying its own natural beauty and variations. Skilled installers will thoughtfully distribute and arrange these boards to create a balanced, cohesive look across the floor.
Please note that wood flooring grades are more pronounced on lighter shades, such as Ivory, Natural Oak, Naturale where the natural variations in the wood are more visible. In contrast, darker or grey wood flooring - like Walnut, Waterfall, Chiana - tend to minimize these grades, creating a more uniform and subtle appearance. For examples, see our projects featuring these colour options.
Proper wood flooring fitting and installation are essential for achieving a high-quality, long-lasting finish. It’s crucial for installers and fitters to understand wood grading, as grades determine the natural variations in colour, knots, and grain patterns. This knowledge helps them plan the placement of planks to create a balanced and cohesive look that matches the desired aesthetic. Without this understanding, the final result may not align with expectations, leading to potential issues. Our installation partners, Ecohardwood Contractors, are experts in wood grading, ensuring a flawless and visually stunning installation every time.
Character Grade: Rugged and Textured Beauty
For those who love dramatic, textured look, our Character Grade wood flooring is the ideal choice. This grade emphasizes the raw, unrefined beauty of oak, offering a highly varied and visually dynamic surface. With more pronounced knots, unlimited medullary rays, micro-cracks, and colour variations, this grade creates an eye-catching, rustic charm that brings nature indoors.
Even though Character Grade boards have knots and grain patterns, they still maintain exceptional durability by excluding sapwood. This ensures that the flooring remains resistant to wear and retains its rugged elegance over time.

Original Grade is our signature selection - wood flooring that beautifully captures the rustic, warm essence of natural wood while incorporating subtle touches of Select grade refinement, making it the perfect choice for creating a cosy, lived-in atmosphere. The wood showcases natural variations such as knots, medullary rays, micro-cracks, and subtle colour shifts, all adding character and depth to your space.

Select Grade: Natural Beauty and Sophistication
Our Select Grade flooring strikes the perfect balance between natural beauty and refined elegance. It offers a slightly more textured look compared to Prime Grade but still maintains a relatively uniform appearance. With small knots, medullary rays, and limited colour variation, this grade provides a touch of natural character without overwhelming the space.

This grade is perfect for modern, minimalist interiors or formal spaces where a clean, refined aesthetic is desired.
