Frobisher Crescent, located in the Barbican Estate in London, is an iconic example of Brutalist architecture. Part of a larger complex designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon in the 1960s and 70s, Frobisher Crescent was initially used for offices and educational purposes. Today, it has been repurposed to include luxury residential apartments while retaining its distinctive architectural features. The crescent-shaped building provides residents with stunning views of the Barbican Centre and the surrounding city, combining historical significance with modern urban living.
Francisco Sutherland Architects took on the challenge of redesigning this penthouse, initially focusing on enhancing bathroom privacy. However, the project evolved into a comprehensive renovation aimed at maximizing the potential of the space. Key enhancements included: the preservation of original vaulted ceilings and double-height areas, the integration of sliding doors, replacing existing wooden floors and staircases with lighter oak flooring and the installation of electrochromic glass balustrades for added privacy.
One of the standout features of this renovation is the installation of Ecohardwood engineered oak floors and oak stairs in Ivory colour. This choice of flooring material not only adds warmth and elegance to the penthouse but also ensures durability and comfort underfoot. The light oak flooring complements the white walls and ceilings, creating a harmonious and visually appealing space.
In addition to the flooring, the architects designed bespoke oak wardrobes and a new kitchen that aligns with the overall aesthetic. The design emphasizes a semi-circular theme, incorporating warm oak floors, walnut contrasts, and grey elements. This cohesive design approach enhances the living experience, providing functionality and style.
The client's collection of African ceramics and artwork adds a personal touch to the penthouse, infusing it with warmth and vibrancy. These cultural elements create a unique and inviting atmosphere, making the space feel like home.
The transformation of the penthouse at Frobisher Crescent is a remarkable example of how thoughtful design and high-quality materials can enhance a living space. Ecohardwood engineered oak floors and oak stairs in Ivory colour not only elevate the aesthetic appeal but also ensure lasting comfort and durability. Francisco Sutherland Architects have successfully blended historical significance with modern luxury, creating a unique and inviting home in the heart of the Barbican Estate.
